Why free games show advertising

Free browser games are paid for by advertising. The game’s publisher may show short ads between levels, and the website that hosts the game may show its own ads around the page. That is how games stay free, but it also means you need to know what is part of the game and what is an advertisement, especially for children.

How to tell an ad from the game

What not to click

Treat anything that tells you to update your device, scan for viruses, claim a prize or download a file as suspicious. Real games do not need you to install software to play in a browser. Avoid buttons that mimic the game’s own controls but sit outside the game window. If a page opens a new tab you did not ask for, close it without interacting.

Safe habits

  1. Close pop-up tabs rather than clicking inside them.
  2. Never enter personal details, passwords or payment information in connection with a free browser game.
  3. Keep your browser and device updated, because updates close security holes.
  4. Use the browser’s built-in pop-up blocker, and consider a reputable ad blocker only if you accept that it may stop some games from loading.
  5. If something looks wrong, close the tab and clear your recent browsing data.

For parents

Sit with younger children the first time they play a new game and show them how to find the close button on an ad. Agree a simple rule: if a screen asks for a name, an email address or a download, they should ask you first. Our safe gaming guide for kids and parents has a longer checklist. Remember that we list games supplied by third parties, and we cannot control the ads they show. If you ever see something inappropriate on one of our pages, please tell us and we will review it.

How this site handles ads

We use Google AdSense to display ads on our own pages. We never ask visitors to click ads, and we do not let advertisers decide what we publish. You can read more in our editorial policy and manage ad personalisation through Google’s ad settings, described in our privacy policy.

If a game will not load because of an ad blocker

Some games depend on scripts that ad blockers stop. If a game stays on a loading screen, try pausing the blocker for that page, or follow the steps in our lag and loading guide.
