About Temple Run
Temple Run is the original endless runner that helped popularise the genre on mobile phones. You play an explorer who has taken a cursed idol from an ancient temple and is chased by creatures known as demon monkeys. The character runs automatically along a path of ruins, bridges and tunnels, and you control him with swipes and tilts. The game is simple to understand, which is why it became so popular, and it is still enjoyable for those who like straightforward arcade challenges.
Controls and gameplay
You swipe left or right to turn at corners, swipe up to jump over gaps and obstacles, and swipe down to slide under barriers. Tilting the phone moves the character slightly to collect coins and avoid danger. The path includes broken sections, fires, trees and narrow ledges, and a single mistake can end the run. Coins collected in each run are used to buy upgrades and power-ups. As you improve, you can unlock additional characters and abilities.
Power-ups and progress
Power-ups include a shield that protects you from one mistake, a coin magnet that attracts coins and a boost that makes you run fast and invincible for a short time. You can upgrade them to last longer. Missions and score multipliers encourage you to try different strategies. Leaderboards allow you to compare your best run with friends and other players. The game can be played offline, which makes it suitable for travel.
Strategy tips
Look ahead to the next turn, and swipe a little before you reach it, because timing is more important than speed. Do not try to collect every coin if it takes you near a gap. Learn the patterns of obstacles, since they repeat in certain combinations. Use power-ups when the track is difficult rather than at the start of a run. When you feel tired, stop for a while, because mistakes happen when concentration drops. Stay calm when the speed increases.
Ads and purchases
The game is free to download and includes advertising and optional purchases for coins and cosmetic items. You can often watch an advertisement for a reward. Because offers change, check the store listing. Parents should use device purchase controls and discuss in-game offers with younger players.
Suitability
The game contains a mild chase theme with fantasy creatures and no gore. It is generally suitable for most ages, though younger children may find the monsters startling. The game requires quick reactions, so it may be hard for very young players.
Who it suits
It suits players who enjoy simple, fast arcade runs, nostalgia and short sessions. It is also a good game to try if you are new to mobile gaming because the controls are intuitive. If you prefer modern graphics or variety in settings, you may prefer the sequel or other runners.
How it compares
Compared with Temple Run 2, the original has a simpler layout and fewer special sections. Compared with Subway Surfers, its tilt controls and single-path design feel different and slightly more classic.
Our take
Temple Run remains a good example of an endless runner with easy rules and a lot of replay value. Head to the official store page linked here to install it.
